I'm not 100% sure exactly what this is that I'm sharing today for Silver Sunday ... my best guess is it's a butter or cheese dish.
The lid has the sweetest dairy cow on it ... and the detail is wonderful.
I'm not even sure what it is made of ... there are no markings on it ... it's pretty heavy for it's size ... not very shiny ... and the metal seems soft ... pewter, maybe? What's your guess?
I love the way the lid is not a perfect circle, but fits perfectly on it's base ... the little strainer part is removable.
Can you tell me any more about my little $5 flea market find?
I'm all ears.
I'm linking up today at Beth's monthly Silver Sunday party here.
Happy Sunday to you,
xo
Jill

Looks to me like a pewter butter dish. You put ice in the bottom, cover with the insert, put the butter on top of the insert, and then add the lid. The butter stays cool & fresh on your table!

I'd have to agree with Sherry....I may not know WHAT it is, but I DO know that I want it! :) What a great find! Maybe we'll see it at Club G.W. this Tuesday? I hope so!

Charming little cow on this unusual piece. All your guesses are as good as mine. But, ice?, I like my butter at room temperature, easier to spread on toast my dear.
ReplyDeleteSusanne.
Its a tea bag holder, the holes are where it dranes into... I love it! I collect vintage cows, let me know if you ever want to sell...

I could see it as a butter dish until I saw the insert. I was thinking more along the lines of bread - ok, my first thought was that it originally had been a trophy of some sort - but you have me stumped.
ReplyDeleteI do like it though.
Maybe ask one of the Friday Farm girl link ups!
Or Real Farm Wives of America and Friends.
Hi Jill,
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure, but I have a small plate that is silver and super heavy and it is labeled on the back as quadruple plate. This probably accounts to its heaviness.
It is truly a wonderful piece and quite unique!
Have a beautiful week.
Sincerely,
Melinda
Hello Jill,
ReplyDeleteI think like Sherry, it is a butter cooler. And for me it looks like pewter. Very nice item. If you want to polish it, pewter gets very shiny, too.
Best greetings, Johanna
Unique piece, whatever it may be...
ReplyDeleteOMG. My last name is STEERS & if you decide to sell it, let me know the price...maybe interested. I love it! See an early post of mine on my blog (maybe in Jan or Feb of 2011) about all of my Steers' collectibles. Thanx for sharing. Tiffany
ReplyDeleteHi Jill, I would definitely say a pewter butter dish... and the ice goes in the bottom. The ice does not freeze the butter (I read one comment where someone likes their butter soft) it just keeps it nice and cool... I am betting it is from England... any marks on the bottom?... beautiful piece and a great price!... xoxo Julie Marie
ReplyDeleteThat is fabulous whatever it is! I just love that cow on top, what a great find... lucky you! t. xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteIf it's a tea strainer or a butter cooler or even a cheese dish...sounds like a great staple for an afternoon tea by the pool...wink wink!

Ohhh, How lucky to find this piece with the cow on top. I would love it for my butter.
