True Story ...

Okay blog peeps, listen to this ... TRUE STORY ... this is the kind of stuff that freaks me out a bit ... you know like "throw it out to the universe and you'll get it ... positive thinking ... just put it out there..." you know what I'm talking about. Do you believe in this philosophy? I'm thinkin' I do. I'm not going into deep personal "stuff" here ... just the fun flea market "stuff" ... the kind of thing I like to talk about here on my blog ...

My first experience with putting a dream out to the universe was my desire to go to Texas and see all the big antique shows plus meet some of the bloggers I had just recently "met" on line. What do you know .. within weeks I got an invite to go to Texas, plus an invitation to sell my "stuff" there. True story.

I like to read.
A lot.
I'm on a first name basis with all of the librarians at our town library.
I had been asking them to do searches for me ... like ..."...uhmmm do you have anything about flea markets, junking, garage sales ... like in fiction that has a nice story with it ... maybe a love interest ... a mystery tied in ... girl fixes trash to treasure and meets the man of her dreams type of easy reading book?"
Nothing.
Have you ever tried to find a book about flea markets {NOT including a price guide type of thingy}in general to read?
Neither could I .... well I must have really been thinking hard about it and sending some mighty powerful brain waves out  into the universe, because then a week later, I kid you not, honest to God truth, I got an e-mail from someone I didn't know asking me if I would like to read this book and review it:

I know ... that freaks me out!! It was dead on! Kinda.

I dove head first into my new book when it arrived ... I was already a chapter or two into it when I realized I wasn't reading a fiction novel ... this was TRUE stuff here. A true story. The main character, Curt Avery is a real guy ... who sells real stuff at real shows practically in my own backyard. He's a smart guy when it comes to his "stuff" ... and here's what else I learned the author was pretty smart too ... before I even knew it I was learning bunches of stuff! Yeah, she, Maureen Stanton, pulled a tricky one, while sharing her flea market adventures with Curt and learning all he has to share about the tricks of the trade I was being sucked into the flea market and antique subculture...I'm expecting a summer beach read and what? I'm getting an education in antiques {serious antiques} AND liking it?! Yes, I am ... I liked the book and I learned tons.

There's nothing stuffy or stodgy here. If I told you that some chapters of the book go into great length about the value of comic books, six board blanket chest, or pottery ... I know, you'd think "boring" ... well you can think again ... because no matter what the subject matter is, this book is entertaining and filled with things that will make you laugh out loud ... things us girls can seriously relate to. Like Mr. Avery sneaking things into his house and hiding them from his wife!!

I even learned a trick or two to search and find things on e-bay ... and it has already paid off for me! Sorry, not telling you ... you'll have to read the book!!

I enjoyed spending part of my summer following these two, Maureen and Curt, to various shows and seeing behind the scene peeks of what actually making a living at the flea would be like. Who knows maybe one day I'll run into one or both of them in the future, like at Brimfield ... ya never know ... I'm just throwing it out to the universe.

Brimfield, Brimfield ....

If you would like to read some more reviews on Killer Stuff and Tons of Money, you can find all of the links here.

And if you would like to read the book ... I'd like to pass along my copy to one of you! Maybe some of you have been wishing for a good flea market read? All you have to do is leave a comment on this post and tell me what book you are enjoying this summer. I'll pick a random winner from the comments on Monday evening.

Happy weekend reading everyone,
xo

  11. I do believe in this type of hocus-pocus. I've had too many things like this to discount it. Great blog post! Seeing as I work at a library I'm always open to new book suggestions. This one sounds fun!! - Kathy

  13. One of the many perks of blogging is being introduced to books I wouldn't normally come across which take me out of my familiar reading pattern. I have read of this book on another blog and hoped to win the copy in the giveaway, but alas.

I have just finished reading Walking the Gobi by Helen Thayer (another recommendation from a blogger). I was intrigued to know how the writer could sustain interest over 249 pages of sand dune after sand dune. I was delighted to find it very readable, introducing me to a part of the world I know nothing about. And the camels provided some comic relief! xx

  14. wow...good vibes to the universe stories!Mine starts off sad -6/15 will be 1 month since my beloved husband (Don a/k/a Cowboy) passed away. It's been an intensely sad 4 weeks, stretching equal parts eternity and milliseconds, and i haven't had much of a chance to read books. (My attention span until recently has been nil)

But i have found solace in the comfort of pretty things in Magnolia Pearl's book, Rachel Ashwell's books and blogs...you know how it goes..but i do still read my "Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy" by Sarah Ban Breathnach every day (yes its dog-eared) because somehow the universe sends me little messages in it all the time, ya know?

OTHER universe doings include me somehow landing on Red Neck Chic Robelyn's blog on July 4th and falling mad in love with her style and attitude and emailing her and then getting a pep talk from her to follow my dream on warrenton/roundtop/marburger and a little antique store in my hometown Havana --and I am now WORKING on them both!

So, i really feel like reading this book would give me another zap of happy from the great big universe.

Also in other news completely unrelated to the contest so you know i am not trying to sway your decision one bit i SWEAR- LOVE your blog and your work and your HAT in that picture up there!:)

  15. Are you still looking for some fun lite summer reading? In case you haven't already checked her out, try Mary Kay Andrews for a little vintage, romance, and mystery.

    http://blog.marykayandrews.com/

Just finished Lincoln Lawyer, in time for Monday night's book club. Also, The Immortal Life of Henrieta Lacks. Ya, I think I need to see what I haven't read of Mary Kay's as well.

  18. Hi Jill... LOVE this post!... and I want to get that book... I have been keeping a "flea market" journal for almost thirty years!!! I started it as a way to keep track of how much money I spent on "junk" and that lead to my writing about the people I met, the stories they told, the info I learned... hey!... I should have written that book!... I have probably been antiquing and collecting since before you were born, you are alot younger than me!... I can just imagine the great stories that author tells... maybe I will do a post about it all and a link to you... thanks for sharing about this book!... xoxo Julie Marie

  21. Wow! Just so cool isn't it! I am reading a Victorian novel right now called Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve. I just finished her book Sea Glass and loved it. It was a great summer read, and this one is also set on an ocean house in the summer time. I plan on reading on my porch all afternoon tomorrow!

  22. I am putting it out to the universe that I'd love to win a copy of this. I have read a few reviews and never a bad one.

Hmm, what am I reading now? I wish I had more time to read. I've been working my way through a Julia Cameron book about writing. The sound of paper. I like her books but right now life is so hectic this is taking me a while.
I need a good storyline to TAKE ME AWAY!
